The Ergs! - Upstairs/Downstairs

It took me a while, but a few months ago I finally "got" The Ergs!. I had initially heard the hype about them around a year ago, but I had only listened to "Hindsight is 20/20, My Friend" which really didn't do it for me at the time. Then a while back, I got this album from another blog and seriously haven't listened to much else since.

Upstairs/Downstairs is usually shadowed by their first full-length, "dorkrockcorkrod" (which I'll post shortly), even though both albums are pretty different musically, imo. As a straight-up, pop-punk album, "dorkrockcorkrod" is definitely better, but "Upstairs/Downstairs" shows a slightly more mature version of The Ergs! nerdy, almost Replacements-esque brand of pop-punk. Standout tracks include "See Him Again", "Books About Miles Davis", and "Fluorescent Stars", the first of which is among my top 5 songs by The Ergs!.

Battalion of Saints - The Second Coming

Possibly one of the most underrated hardcore albums to come out of the 80's. This was released in 1984 and includes a cover of "Ace of Spades" (Motorhead). Someone's been real busy and uploaded almost every track off Death R Us, a compilation, on youtube, so check it out if you're still unsure. One of my personal favorites followed by the title track of the LP:

Ten Grand - The Comprehensive List of Everyone Who Has Ever Done Anything Wrong to Us

This is quite possibly one of the coolest screamo concept albums I've ever heard. There's this computerized voice in the background, reading off people's names, including "The Get Up Kids" and "The Asshole That Stole Scott Lawrenceson's PlayStation." The real reason to listen to this album, however, is undoubtedly Matt Davis' vocals. Sadly, he died at the age of 24 of a heart attack.

Cool little note about Ten Grand's name: Ten Grand was originally named The Vida Blue, however another band of the same name, featuring some guy from Phish, offered the band $10,000 if they changed their name.

Kind of Like Spitting was an American indie rock band. They formed in 1996 in Portland, Oregon. The band was led by prolific singer-songwriter Ben Barnett, who has drawn comparisons to Elliott Smith, Mark Eitzel, Billy Bragg, and Robert Polard.

I first listened to Kind of Like Spitting around two years ago, but back then I was still too into Ceremony, Trash Talk, and Trapped Under Ice to really "get it". Then, a few months ago, I found "You Secretly Want Me Dead" and listened to it on loop for the bulk of that week. The most accurate way I can describe his sound is to imagine what Elliott Smith would have sounded like, had all of his songs been written about heroin, but instead written about heartbreak.

Hightide Hotel

First post in a loooong time. Aside from playing StarCraft, I've got nothing better to do right now, so I thought I may as well post this awesome new band I just found out about.

Hightide Hotel is from Philly, and they play music similar to that of Algernon Cadwallader, except slightly more mathy. They've got a full-length in the works as well, which I'm super fucking excited for.
